Valentin Alfery ist ein autodidaktischer Tänzer und Choreograf, der aus der Street-/Club-Szene kommt. Während er in der europäischen Jam- und Battle-Szene verwurzelt ist, begann er 2004 als freiberuflicher Tänzer in Theaterprojekten zu arbeiten. Zusammen mit Dušana Baltić ist er Mitbegründer und -leiter der österreichischen Tanzcompany Hungry Sharks. Nach seinem ersten großen Bühnenwerk Falling aus dem Jahr 2009 erarbeitete er mit den Hungry Sharks sieben abendfüllende Produktionen, die Unterwasser-Tanzperformance Zeitgeist und mehrere Kurzchoreografien sowie Kreationen als Auftragswerke für Hochschulen und freie Projekte. Die Arbeit der Hungry Sharks wird von drei österreichischen Bundesländern – Wien, Salzburg und Kärnten – sowie von der Kulturabteilung des Landes Österreich gefördert. Seit 2016 werden die Stücke regelmäßig von brut Wien und Szene Salzburg koproduziert. 2019 initiierte Valentin Alfery Young Sharks als lose Projektreihe für aufstrebende Tänzer:innen aus dem urbanen Bereich, um Erfahrungen in theatralen Kontexten zu sammeln. Als Gastlehrer und Choreograf arbeitet er u. a. an der HF Bühnentanz Zürich, SEAD Salzburg und MUK Wien. Neben seiner Tätigkeit als freischaffender Choreograf und Performer (u. a. mit Simon Mayer), für die er mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichnet wurde, ist er seit 2013 auch als Puppenspieler in Opernprojekten der Blind Summit Puppet Company tätig, so beispielsweise seit 2020 in der Operninszenierung Madama Butterfly von Anthony Minghella an der Wiener Staatsoper. Von 2018 bis 2022 kuratierte er als künstlerischer Co-Leiter Straßenkunst, Tanz, Performance und Musik im Rahmen des Ganzjahresprogramms der kulturschiene Salzburg. Valentin Alferys Kreationen bewegen sich in einem breiten künstlerischen Spektrum, beschäftigen sich oft mit sozialen Themen und zeichnen sich aus durch eine starke urbane Bewegungssprache, die Arbeit mit abstrakten Elementen und strukturelle Logik. Das regelmäßige Auftreten als Performer auf der Straße ist bis heute ein wichtiger Bestandteil seines künstlerischen Schaffens.

Valentin Alfery is a self-taught dancer and choreographer coming from the street/club style community. While being rooted in the European jam and battle scene, he started to work as a freelance dancer in theatre projects in 2004. Together with Dušana Baltić, Valentin is the co-founder and -director of the Austrian dance company Hungry Sharks. Following his first major stage work Falling from 2009, he realised seven feature-length productions, the underwater dance performance Zeitgeist and several short pieces with the Hungry Sharks, as well as creations in commissioned, academic or project-based contexts. The work of Hungry Sharks is funded by three Austrian regions – Vienna, Salzburg and Carinthia – and by the cultural department of Austria. Since 2016 the pieces are regularly co-produced by brut Wien and Szene Salzburg. In 2019 Young Sharks was initiated as a loose project series for emerging dancers from the urban field to gain experience in theatrical contexts. Valentin Alfery worked as a guest teacher and choreographer at the HF Bühnentanz in Zurich, as well as at SEAD (Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance) and MUK (Dance Education of the Vienna Music and Art University). In addition to his work as a freelance choreographer and performer (e. g. with Simon Mayer), for which he has received numerous awards, he is working as a puppeteer since 2013 within opera projects of the Blind Summit Puppet Company. In 2020 he became part of the puppet cast of the house repertory opera Madama Butterfly by Anthony Minghella at the Vienna State Opera which is being shown ongoingly. From 2018 - 2022 he has been curating street art, dance, performance and music within the year-round program of kulturschiene Salzburg as an artistic codirector. Valentin Alfery’s creations can be located on a broad artistic spectrum, often refer to social topics and contain a strong urban movement language, the work with abstract elements and a structural logic. Being part of several different projects, groups and collectives, Valentin is performing and busking on the streets on a regular basis until today as a way to keep a certain perspective on his artistic journey.
